Job Description

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) seeks a Team Leader to provide visionary leadership of its variation resources. The EBI is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The Team Leader will lead the newly created variation team consisting of approximately 10 staff members and will be expected to form external collaborations and raise funds via competitive peer-reviewed grants to supplement core funding allocated for the team leader position, staff members and computational infrastructure. A key task of the variation team will be the development of new high-value variation resources designed to serve as a platform for research into molecular medicine, disease and connections between genome variation and phenotype for human and other species.

Newly developed variation resources will be coordinated and integrated to the extent appropriate with major existing EBI projects such as Ensembl, UniProt and the ArrayExpress Expression Atlas. The variation team will consolidate existing EBI databases including the European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA) and the Database of Genomic Variants archive (DGVa). In addition, the variation team leader will be expected to develop connections with appropriate health care and research organisations in Europe and worldwide.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates who hold an MD or a PhD in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Computer Science or other relevant field with postdoctoral experience or with demonstrated experience of team leadership in the specific fields will be considered. All candidates are required to have a detailed familiarity with bioinformatics and genome-wide computational analysis. It would be a distinct advantage to have management experience and demonstrated potential of successful application and management of external grants, although this is not essential.

Excellent English, both written and oral, and interpersonal skills are essential.
