Introduction

It's big, it's loud, it's cold, and it's a challenging and an exciting place to work! Come and join the team of operators of the LHC cryogenic facilities, a unique opportunity to work on machines that constitute nearly half the world's stock of large helium liquefiers. At CERN, helium needs to flow like water from a tap. CERN is the world's largest particle physics laboratory and its flagship accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, depends on having an unrivalled set of cryogenic systems on hand to guarantee reliable operation. A team of expert operators tend to these systems 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. From start-up and routine operation to maintenance support and emergency interventions, no stone is left unturned in the quest for perfectly reliable operation. The experience you will gain as a member of the expert team of LHC cryogenic operators could not be acquired anywhere else, teaching you to work autonomously and to respond to all manner of situations around complex industrial processes. Furthermore, during the course of your contract, you will have the opportunity to formalize the experience gained in a formal certification.

Functions

After a period of training on CERN's cryogenic systems, the successful candidate will be responsible, on the ground and remotely, for:

  • Operating the LHC cryogenic system, including trouble-shooting, emergency interventions and maintenance support, depending on requirements and situations.
  • Updating the operating procedures, in particular with respect to the safety rules.
  • Managing technical documentation.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Knowledge of thermodynamics.
  • Knowledge of cooling process and regulation.
  • Use of data acquisition and treatment software.

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:
