Introduction

Are electronics design and development your fields of expertise? Are you skilled in both analogue and digital design in the power electronics domain ? If you are motivated, eager to acquire new skills and knowledge in a team of professionals who will train you in the field of pulsed power systems in the largest particle physics laboratory in the world, this is an opportunity for you. Take part!

You will join the Accelerator Beam Transfer group (te-dep-abt) which is responsible for the design, development, construction, installation, exploitation and maintenance of injection and extraction related equipment for the whole CERN accelerator complex. Within this group, the Electronics and Controls Section is responsible for providing electronics and controls support to many different systems including:

  • Fast pulsed magnets with associated high voltage pulse generators and transmission lines.
  • Electrostatic and magnetic septa, including high voltage power supplies for electrostatic septa.
  • Devices protecting against beam incidents.

Functions

As an electronics technical engineer in the TE-ABT-EC section you will work in an international team of hardware and equipment-level software developers. After an initial period of familiarization, you will:

  • Study, develop and commission electronic control systems for high voltage pulse generators of fast pulsed kicker systems, initially for the future ELENA machine (Extra Low Energy Antiproton Ring).
  • Design analogue and digital modules for use in these control systems.
  • Participate in the exploitation, maintenance, and repair of control systems for other operational beam transfer systems in the CERN accelerator complex, proposing improvements and upgrades as required.
  • Study, develop and commission power electronic switches and modules, as well as high voltage modulators.
  • Take responsibility for the specification, procurement and maintenance of all commercial and in-house HV d.c. power supplies used by the section.

Qualification required

Technical engineer diploma or equivalent qualification in electronics engineering.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

  • Several years’ experience in electronics design and development, both digital and analogue: good theoretical knowledge and practical experience in analogue circuit design, modelling and simulation.

The technical competencies you will need to take up the post are:

  • Design of pulsed power systems.
  • Design of electronics for low power high voltage circuits.
  • Commissioning, operation and maintenance of electronic systems.
  • Commissioning and maintenance of electro-mechanical equipment.

The behavioural competencies you will have to demonstrate are:

  • Demonstrating flexibility: willing and able to adjust to changing demands and circumstances; Adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirement.
  • Learning and Sharing knowledge : Keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information.
  • Working in teams : working well in groups and readily fitting into a team.
  • Achieving results : Working in a structured and efficient way.
  • Demonstrating accountability : Taking responsibility and accountable for own results.
  • Managing self : Working well autonomously ; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.

The languages competencies required for this post are:
