Introduction
Are you an experienced electro-mechanical professional? What about taking part in the design of the world’s lowest energy anti-proton ring? An amazing role combining mechanics, electricity and magnets cooling. CERN. Take part!
TE-MSC-MNC has the pleasure in announcing a position for a technical engineer (mechanical or electro-mechanical) to support the construction and operation of new normal-conducting accelerator magnets. The Technology Department (TE) is responsible for technologies which are specific to existing particle accelerators, facilities and future projects.
The MSC Group is responsible for:
-
-Design, construction and measurements of superconducting and normal conducting magnets for the CERN accelerator complex.
-
-Integration in the CERN accelerator complex, magnet cryostats and magnet quality control.
-
-Support to operation of the accelerators for magnets, magnet performance, devices (current leads).
-
-Development of associated technologies, namely superconductors, insulation and polymers, superconducting electrical devices and magnetic measurements for present and future accelerators.
The MNC Section (Magnet Normal Conducting) is responsible for:
-
-CERN-wide support for normal-conducting accelerator magnets.
-
-Design, construction, commissioning, maintenance and upgrade of the normal-conducting magnets for present and future CERN accelerators and beam lines.
Functions
As a technical engineer (mechanics or electromechanics) in the MNC Section, you will actively take part in the development, construction and exploitation of normal-conducting magnets for new project and in particular for the ELENA project at CERN.
This will include in the following tasks:
-
-Participate in the mechanical design and the preparation of specification drawings of normal-conducting electro-magnets and magnet components.
-
-Write up technical specification and other technical documents required for the magnet procurement.
-
-Follow-up fabrication of magnets and magnet components outside CERN.
-
-Take care of the quality control by inspections and acceptance tests at the premises of suppliers and at CERN.
-
-Select and procure components for magnets.
-
-Based on the internally existing experience, prepare test procedures and operate test equipment.
-
-Organize and perform laboratory tests and measurements on magnets and their components.
-
-Keep up-to-date the technical documentation, including drawings and quality assurance records.
-
-Organize and participate in the installation, commissioning and maintenance of magnets.
Qualification required
Technical engineer bachelor or equivalent qualification in mechanical or electro-mechanical engineering or equivalent.*
*Please note that preference will be given to candidates with the qualification level indicated above: candidates with higher qualifications than those required will normally not be considered for this vacancy.
Experience and competencies
-
-We require a demonstrated experience of at least 5 years in the field of engineering, construction and testing of electro-mechanical devices.
The technical competencies you will need to take up the post are:
-
-Very good knowledge and experience in following up manufacturing, assembly, and acceptance tests of mechanical and electrical equipment.
-
-Some experience in development of mechanical and electrical equipment and prototype work.
-
-Good knowledge of modern measurement techniques in mechanics, electricity or hydraulics.
-
-Good knowledge of mechanical properties of materials.
-
-Knowledge in computer aided design of industrial drawings (i.e. AutoCAD) and office software (EXCEL, WORD, MS Project, etc…).
The behavioural competencies you will have to demonstrate are:
-
-Achieving results: having a structured and organized approach towards work and being able to set priorities and plan tasks according to a given schedule with results in mind. Delivering high quality results on time and within budget.
-
-Solving problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, and taking actions to address them. Finding the information needed to solve problems.
-
-Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
-
-Working in teams: understanding when teamwork is required to achieve the best results; includes others accordingly and shares information.
-
-Managing self: taking initiative beyond regular tasks and makes things happen. Remaining objective, focussed and productive in a stressful environment, focusing on solutions rather than problems.
The language competencies required for this post are:
-
-Good knowledge of either English or French. Basic knowledge of the other language or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.
